José Mourinho has officially returned to Real Madrid and is expected to be unveiled as the club’s new head coach at the Spanish giants’ headquarters, ending weeks of speculation.
The 63-year-old Portuguese manager returns to Santiago Bernabéu more than a decade after leaving in 2013, having left behind a strong legacy of success and rivalry during his first spell at the club.
According to internal club sources and international media reports, Mourinho has already agreed to a two-year contract, with an option for an additional year depending on his success in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
The decision to bring Mourinho back follows the club’s presidential election, in which Florentino Pérez was re-elected and one of his key promises was to return the coach who previously won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid.
Mourinho is expected to arrive with a clear plan to reshape the squad, prioritizing players with strength, discipline, and competitive mentality rather than continuing a focus solely on big-name signings.
Reports suggest that he has already submitted a shortlist of transfer targets, including defenders, a defensive midfielder, and an attacking midfielder, as part of a broader rebuild for the 2026/27 season.
During his first spell at Madrid (2010–2013), Mourinho famously broke Barcelona’s dominance under Pep Guardiola, winning major trophies and reaching three consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
However, he left after internal dressing room tensions and disagreements with management, making this return widely viewed as a “second chance of redemption” at the club.
