Cape Verde Make History After Holding Spain to 0-0 Draw in World Cup Debut

Cape Verde have written history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Spain to a goalless draw (0-0) in their opening Group H match. The result gave Cape Verde their first-ever point in World Cup history while marking a memorable debut on the global stage.

Making their first appearance at a World Cup, Cape Verde showed remarkable defensive discipline against one of the tournament favourites. Despite Spain dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities, Cape Verde’s defensive line and veteran goalkeeper Vozinha stood firm to secure a crucial point.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, aged 40, was the standout performer of the match. He also made history as one of the oldest players ever to feature in a World Cup debut, with his outstanding performance earning widespread praise on social media.

Cape Verde head coach Pedro “Bubista” Brito had insisted before the match that his team had not come to the World Cup merely to participate, but to compete. That message was clearly reflected on the pitch as his players showed strong fighting spirit against the European champions.

The result gives Cape Verde a valuable point in Group H, which also includes Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. The draw boosts their hopes of competing for a place in the knockout stage.

For Spain, the result comes as a surprise, as many expected them to secure a comfortable win in their opening match of the tournament.
