Orlando Pirates have written a new chapter in South African football history after winning the South African Premiership title, ending a 14-year wait with a 2-0 victory over Orbit College at Mbombela Stadium.
The win also brought an end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-year dominance of the league, as Pirates held their nerve on the final day of the season under immense pressure.
Going into the match, Pirates knew only a win would secure the title. Any other result would have handed Sundowns a ninth consecutive championship, but the Johannesburg side delivered when it mattered most.
The match was tightly contested, with Orbit College forced into a defensive approach due to sustained pressure from Pirates. The breakthrough came towards the end of the first half when Orbit goalkeeper Nkomo accidentally turned the ball into his own net while dealing with a dangerous corner kick.
The second half started at high intensity, and Pirates doubled their lead after another defensive error, this time from Ngiba, who inadvertently put the ball into his own goal while attempting to clear a threatening attack.
Orbit College struggled to recover in the second half as Pirates controlled possession and managed the game professionally until the final whistle.
The result also confirmed Orbit College’s relegation from the top flight after failing to secure the points needed to survive.
With Sundowns having dominated the league for eight straight seasons, Pirates’ triumph marks a major shift in South African football and opens a new era with Orlando Pirates as champions once again.
